The Department of Physics of Addis Ababa University has more than half a century of history in education and research. Its graduates have achieved recognition and distinction nationally and internationally. It is has taken essential part in various educational and technological endeavors in the years of its service to the nation.
There have been several phases in the development of the department. In the late seventies, the department commenced graduate program. Its focus has been training instructors to higher learning institutions and this indeed is the central aim of our graduate program to this date. The department, as a unit of a mother university, in the country, has assisted the rise and development of various physics departments of universities and colleges all over Ethiopia and maintained close working relationship with them.
Graduate program expansion has been the policy of the Ethiopian government. Accordingly, in the past four years progresses have been made in the graduate program of the department of Physics. In 2004, Doctor of Philosophy program was launched by enrolling one candidate. Enrollment has become ten fold in the year 2006/07. In addition, the department has been equipped with new experimental facilities such as Raman spectroscopy and Laser machine. The emergence of multidisciplinary new research (strengthen the existing) and teaching programs has maintained our vitality and strength so that we remain most relevant institution in physics research and education in the country.
An era of change is coming up as the university is planning to transform itself from mainly undergraduate teaching to postgraduate and research University. This offers us unprecedented opportunities to fulfill the vision detailed in this plan. Although we face the challenge of garnering the resources necessary to implement our plan, we are hopeful by the prospects the future holds: expansion of the graduate program; our increased role in interdisciplinary and crosscutting initiatives of the faculty; diversification and increased relevance our undergraduate program are ways and challenges of years ahead.
With perseverance of will and access to resources, we will use this unique opportunity to continue creating a highly ranked physics department that is at the forefront of discovery, learning and engagement, and central to the University's goal of achieving preeminence.
