When the Faculty of Science came into existence in 1950 as a unit in the University College of Addis Ababa, it was organized into two small sections called Section A and Section B. In Section A, students were given basic engineering training as a preparation to go abroad and specialize in one of the many branches of engineering by working towards the degree of a B.Sc. or higher. In Section B, students were prepared for medical school. In both sections, the ocurses offered were for three years.
In 1959 the Faculty of Science was organized under a new set-up. It started offering courses leading to the B.Sc. degree in the following combinations: Course "A"-Mathemattics and Physics, Course "B"-Biology and Chemistry, and Course "C"-Chemistry and Geology. This set up continued until 1961 when the then Haile Selassie I University was established. The Faculty of Science was then organized into five departments offering four-year courses leading to the B.Sc. degree.
One of the five departments established under the new system in 1961 was the Department of Mathematics. Sicne then it has grown considerably to become one of the largest departments in the University, offering about sixty courses to about four thousand students. The Department has its own builiding which houses four-computer laboratories with 80 computers, one seminar room, a graduate library, a staff computer room and staff offices. It shares lecture rooms and library services with the other five departments of the Faculty.
