Computational Science (CS) is an emerging new area of specialization that brings computer science and traditional sciences together to a new frontier, with numerical computations and graphics visualization playing a key role in scientific investigations. It has a core knowledge base and a broad application base. In a broad sense, it means science done computationally. In a more focused sense, it means science of computing. We are set in a time of extraordinary advances in science, technology, and education. At the core of these rapid developments is a dramatic increase in the power and use of computers.
Capitalizing on these advances, computational science blends several fields including computer science, applied mathematics, and application sciences (such as biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, business among many others). Computational science must be distinguished from computer science; computer science focuses on the computer itself; it is the science and engineering of computer systems, including hardware and software. On the other hand, Computational Science is an nterdisciplinary field that uses the technology of the computer to study problems in thematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences and other applied science and engineering fields. A computational scientist needs to be conversant in both fundamentals of computer science and in the scientific filed whose problems he/she wishes to solve.
The CS program is designed in such a way that part of it is common to all students, and parties specific to participating departments. This arrangement promotes the study of the methods of scientific computing while simultaneously advancing the study of disciplinary science. The Program requires a total of 27 credit hours of graduate coursework and research project - 15 credit hours of this coursework is common to all students in the program and consists of programming and mathematics courses, while the remaining 12 credit hours consist of options chosen from approved disciplinary courses related to computing, computational simulations, and numerical modeling. This arrangement exposes students to some of the fundamental methods of computational science, while also providing them with an understanding of the application of computing within their chosen discipline.
